BC Rivers Day
Sunday, September 26, 2010

In celebration of BC Rivers Day, paddle with us down the Harrison River in the company of professional guides.  You’ll be part of a giant flotilla of Voyageurs, canoes, kayaks, and rafts that will travel 18 km from Harrison Lake to historic Kilby.  Along the way, a Chehalis cultural guide will show us ancient rock paintings and village sites, and share with us some of the stories and traditions that define the cultural wealth of the Harrison.

The Harrison is also wealthy in fish and wildlife values.  The river supports all five species of Pacific salmon, and it was recently declared a “Salmon Stronghold” by river advocate Mark Angelo and the Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (PFRCC).  The “Stronghold” designation offers effective new tools to protect the long-term survival of salmon in our backyard.

Trip Leaders:

 Kelsey Charlie
Kelsey is a cultural historian with the Chehalis First Nation.  He has a detailed knowledge of the cultural landscape and will take us to places along the river that are historically and spiritually important to the Chehalis.

 Gordon Ennis
Gordon is a fisheries biologist who has studied and traveled the Harrison for years.  His report for PFRCC helped to secure “Salmon Stronghold” status for the river, and he’ll help us to understand why the Harrison system is so good at producing fish.

 Kelly Pearce
Kelly is a Hope resident and naturalist, with a detailed knowledge of the plants, animals, and cultural history of the North Cascades and Lower Fraser River Watershed.

Pre-Register:
All participants must register and pay in advance so we know you’re coming.  You can pay by credit card via this web site (click the “Register Now” button on the top right side of this page) or by mailing us a cheque.  Either way, please pre-register with us online.  Contact us at 604-869-1274 or by email at info@hopemountain.org if you have questions or need help registering.

Skill Levels:

Guided Motorized Raft participants are not required to have any experience or physical stamina.  Rafts offer extra safety, comfort, and they're navigated by a guide.  No paddling is required!

Voyageur Canoes offer good stability and are navigated by an experienced guide (from the rear).  Your help with paddling will keep the boat on course, but is relatively easy and no experience is required.

Canoe/kayak participants do not require previous river experience. The Harrison has relatively gentle currents, and the presence of a motorized escort raft ensures rapid rescue if you accidentally overturn.  The trip is moderate in terms of physical demand, though strong winds can sometimes affect how strongly you need to paddle downstream.

Paddlers are welcome to bring their own canoe or kayak. If you choose to bring your own watercraft, please note that we will be checking for the following safety requirements:

1. One lifejacket or PFD for each person on board.
2. One buoyant heaving line at least 15 metres long.
3. One bailer or manual bilge pump.
4. One sound signaling device, such as pealess whistle.
5. Secure buoyancy fore and aft.

We reserve the right to reject watercraft and return the participant's registration fee (less $20 admin. fee) if their watercraft is deemed unsafe or the appropriate equipment is absent.

Age Restriction:
Children 8 years old and up are welcome.
