Introduction to Geocaching

Ted Nash, president of the BC Geocaching Association will lead an introduction to this fast-growing sport.  Field-based activities will demonstrate how to use GPS to locate caches and establish new ones.  A computer lab component will show how the Web is used to communicate within the geocaching community.


Course Content:
*  An introduction to geocaching and cache types
*  Setting up a geocaching account and user profile on the Web
*  How to locate an existing geocache
*  How to establish a new geocache
*  Ethical codes of geocaching
*  Logging your finds and sharing notes and photos on a geocaching Web site


Trip Leaders:


  Ted Nash (lead instructor)
Ted Nash is the President of the BC Geocaching Association and has been involved with geocaching since August 2008.  He has hosted several introductory workshops on the sport.  Ted grew up in Hope and graduated from Hope Secondary in 1998.  His geocaching adventures have taken him on hikes to the top of numerous local mountains, including Mt. Cheam, Lady Peak, Elk Mountain, Mt. Thurston and Vedder Mountain.  He currently lives with his girlfriend Lori in Bridal Falls.

  Kelly Pearce
Kelly is a Hope resident and Program Director for the Hope Mountain Centre.  Kelly can provide some natural and human history interpretation while we’re out on the trails near Hope.

Cost:

$20 per adult.  Children 18 and under are $10 if accompanied by an adult.
There is an additional fee of $5.00 if you wish to rent a GPS device from Hope Mountain Centre.

Schedule:

  8:45 AM – Meet at the UFV Hope Campus (see map)
  9:00 AM – Class session begins (UFV computer lab)
10:30 AM – Drive to field exercise on Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) near Hope
10:45 AM – Explore for caches on the KVR and Hope-Nicola Valley Trails
12:00 PM – Lunch break in the great outdoors
12:30 PM – Resume field exploration and establish a new cache
  2:00 PM – Return to UFV campus in Hope
  3:00 PM – Log notes and photos of caches found/established
  4:00 PM – Program ends

What to Bring:

*  Lunch and high-energy snack food
*  Water (at least 1 litre per person)
*  Hiking boots (no runners please)
*  Warm clothes and rain gear
*  Sunglasses, camera, binoculars
*  Hand-held GPS device (Hope Mountain Centre also has units to rent)
