About the event

Join us for a memorable overnight family camping experience at Ross Lake Reservoir in the breathtaking Skagit Valley Provincial Park, specially planned for Nlaka'pamux families. Co-hosted by Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning (HMCOL) and Nlaka'pamux Nation Tribal Council (NNTC), and funded by Skagit Environmental Endowment Commission (SEEC), this program offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the rich cultural heritage of the Nlaka'pamux people who have used this land for many years.

LEARNING SESSIONS

Engage in informative sessions led by esteemed speakers Kevin Duncan and John Haugen from the Nlaka'pamux Nation Tribal Council (NNTC), Nlaka'pamux elder Lilian Grenier, and Meg Turner from Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning (HMCOL). Topics will include:

  • The traditional territory of the Nlaka'pamux

  • Human and cultural history

  • Cedar root, mushrooms and harvesting

  • Local wildlife and plant life

  • Language and storytelling

Families are welcome to attend just for the day but are encouraged to camp overnight to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the park, fostering a deeper connection with the land. This event provides a wonderful opportunity for families to bond and share experiences with one another in a supportive environment.

LOGISTICS

Participants are required to transport themselves and bring all their own camping equipment and meals (with the exception of Saturday dinner which will be provided by the event hosts). Stay and enjoy a warm meal together while sharing stories and experiences around the campfire at night.

There are many tent spots as well as very limited space for campers/trailers/small RVs.

Note this is a rustic campground with no electricity nor plumbing (no flush toilets nor showers). There are 2 pit toilets, drinkable water from a pump, and a cooking shelter.
