About the event
Join Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning and HOPE SAR to learn how to Survive Outside!
Living in the Fraser Valley & Fraser Canyon communities gives us all unfettered access to incredible outdoor recreation opportunities. But just because outdoor adventure is right outside our doorsteps, it doesn’t mean we don't need to be prepared.
“Statistics show that each year across Canada there are approximately 5,000 ground Search and Rescue incidents. They involve all types of outdoor enthusiasts, from hikers and skiers to backcountry travellers and boaters.” - AdventureSmart. This November, whether you are new to outdoor recreation or looking for a refresher, you will learn how to be prepared for your next adventure and what to do when things don’t go to plan.

OUR GUEST SPEAKERS:

Jeremie has been a dedicated member of Hope Search and Rescue for over eight years and a passionate outdoorsman for more than 15 years. His extensive backcountry experience spans everything from day hikes to multi-day adventures, including rigorous 14-day canoeing and hiking expeditions.
Since joining Hope SAR, Jeremy has steadily expanded his skills and qualifications. Starting with basic Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR), he has advanced to the role of Ground Search Team Lead (GSTL) and developed expertise in a wide range of rescue disciplines—including wilderness rope rescue, swift water and river boat rescue, avalanche response, highway extrication (Jaws of Life), and helicopter operations. He is also a certified instructor for both snowmobile safety and the AdventureSmart public education program.
Jeremy's love for the outdoors drives his commitment to search and rescue. As a local contractor specializing in interior renovations, his flexible schedule allows him to respond quickly to emergency callouts. He consistently contributes more than 700 volunteer hours annually to Hope SAR, exemplifying his deep dedication to both his community and the team.

A dedicated member of Hope Search and Rescue for the past three years, Laura volunteers over 200 hours annually - balancing her SAR responsibilities with a full-time role as a Violence Prevention Educator for Fraser Health and a 12-year nursing career.
Her SAR qualifications include Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR), auto extrication, and helicopter hover exit training. In addition to field operations, she contributes behind the scenes as a member of the Health and Safety Committee and supports the team through grant writing. Laura is currently working toward her Rope Rescue Technician certification to further expand her rescue skills.
As an AdventureSmart educator, Laura is passionate about promoting safe outdoor recreation. Her personal interests include hiking, backpacking, camping, swimming, paddling, weightlifting, jujitsu, reading, gardening, and spending quality time with family and friends.
HOST:

Program Director, Meg Turner, considers our wild spaces her second home. Raised in the Girl Guiding community and an active outdoor family, she feels comfortable leading others and sharing her passion for the outdoors. With multiple first-aiding certifications, including Remote First Aid, participants can feel safe exploring the trails with her. Having recently completed her BC Adventure Smart training, Meg will surely prepare everyone well for safe outdoor programs. She is stoked to head out into the wilderness with you hiking, snowshoeing, paddling, camping - whatever fun activity we have planned, she’s in her element and excited to create a memorable place-based learning experience with you.
